Teaching Techniques for young learners
1. Cuisenaire
Rods
With this teaching tool the
teachers may teach many kinds of language materials such as teaching word
stress and also preposition, colors, degree comparison, etc.
For example, teaching procedure in
using this technique to teach degree comparison.
a. Make
small blocks of woods in different lengths and different color for each length
b. Show
it to the students and ask them to differentiate between one Cuisenaire rods to
the other one.
For
example: - the red Cuisenaire is bigger than the yellow one, the green
Cuisenaire is smaller than the yellow one, and the red one is the biggest of
all.
2. Picture
stories
Picture and pictures stories can be
from a book, hand out, draw it on the board or OHP, on flashcard or posters.
The teachers can teach many kinds of material through picture especially
vocabularies.
The teaching procedure in teaching
vocabularies with this technique:
a. Introduce
the topic to the students first
b. Give
every students one picture of the material, if it is not possible at least give
one picture to two students
c. Focus
on the picture and ask the students about what they see on the picture and ask
them to describe it
d. If
it possible at the end of the lesson the teacher may tell the story of based on
the picture
e. With
this technique the students not only learn about new vocabulary but also try to
recognize the real things of the vocabularies
3. Word
card displays
Word card displays are good for
displaying and to work on the flannel graph. The teachers will be able to tech
any kinds of sentence constructions from the simple to the complex one.
The teaching procedure that are
used in this technique:
a. The
teachers have to have board or at least something where you can stick your card
b. Prepare
your cards that consist of various words related to the present tense for
example. At least you have to prepare verb and adverb and also subjects.
c. Put
double tip on your card so that the students will be able to stick the card on
the board
d. When
everything is ready give your students example of how to do it
e. Ask
them about their habitual, their daily activity or their hobby
f. Ask
them to put the answers for your questions by ordering the card that you
already prepared
4. Back
to the board
This is kind of game in the class
room. The teachers may use it as fillers or as an integrated practice activity.
Here the teachers may teach lexical items or vocabularies to their students.
The teaching procedure of this
technique:
a. Divide
the class into two teams. Ask each team to send one of their member in front of
the class with their back to the board
b. The
teacher write the word that will be used in the game
c. The
team of the students who are sitting face the board give some clue to their
friend related to the word on the board
d. Once
they find it the teacher write another word and keep going until certain time
that already agreed to.
With
this activity the students not only learn about the word but they try ti
understand the word better.
5. Sound
effect recording
Sound effect is recording that have
hardly any words on, but instead contains of sequence of noise such as crushes,
bumps, bangs, etc. with all these sounds the teacher may ask their students to
make up a story( for upper grade). If you are teaching young learners, you may
ask your students to guess the sound that they hear.
The teaching procedure with this
technique:
a. The
teachers have to prepare all the equipments such as cassette recording, tape
and also worksheet
b. To
make it more attractive make your worksheet with the picture of the things that
they are going to listen from the recording
c. Ask
the students to put number to the picture and name the picture based on the
sound they hear from the recording
d. With
this activity the students not only recognize the sound but also the picture of
the real things plus how to write it correctly
6. Kim’s
game
This technique is mostly like a
game; however, the teacher still able to teach their students through this game
such as vocabularies subject.
The teaching procedure of this
technique:
a. The
teachers have to prepare 20 to 30 small objects such as pencil, cassette,
paperback, comb and ruler.
b. Show
it to your students for 2 minutes so that the students are able to recognize
most of it.
c. Ask
the students to write all the subjects that they could remember
d. When
they finish ask them to come in front and read all the things that they could
remember from their notes
e. At
the end of the game the teacher show them all the things again and say it
together
f. Counts
all the subjects that the students remember. Who’s got the most and who’s got
less; however, the teacher should remember this game is not about whom the
winner is but how the students enjoy the learning process.
7. Paper
dolls
These are very useful tools fro
teaching the students about clothes and it is not that expensive to buy or you
can make it yourselves.
The teaching procedure of this
technique:
a. The
teachers have to prepare the paper dolls
b. Prepare
all kinds of clothes paper, you may buy it or you can make your own
c. Ask
your students to follow your instruction. For example, please pt a hat, long
black trousers, and a t-shirt on Cathy( the girl paper doll)
d. With
this activity the teachers not only teach them about varieties of clothes but
also how to understand instruction
8. Transparencies
If the schools where you teach
provide you with an overhead projector, you may teach your students through
this.
Te teaching procedure of this
technique:
a. You
have to prepare yourselves with computer and also power point slides of your
material
b. Through
power point you can design your slides so it looks attractive
c. Once
you in the class connect the computer to the projector and you can start your
lesson. For example, you want to teach your students about kitchen and kitchen
utensils. You may show one picture of kitchen and let the students to guess
what room this is. When they already fond it, show them the kitchen utensils
one by one. Through this the students will remember the word quickly and last
longer in their mind
9. Card
Games
This activity is similar to
flashcard. The students have to find out the picture themselves.
The teaching procedure for this
technique:
a. Prepared
yourselves with lots of cards related to the material that you are going to
teach
b. Your
card is a picture card not a word card. Put all the cards in a box and scramble
it. make sure that you make double cards for each pictures
c. Ask
one or two students come in front of the class
d. Give
the instruction to listen to your story and find out the picture of the things
that you said in the box card
e. When
you tell the story the students keep looking for the cards and stick it to the
board.
f. When
they finished ask them to tell the story in their own way related to the
picture they’ve got
10. Back
to nature
Every school no matter where it is
will have garden and play ground. When you don’t have any material prepared you
may use your surrounding as your teaching aid.
The procedure of this technique:
a. Ask
your students to make a group ( the ideal one is 3 to 4 students in one group)
b. Explain
what you want them to do. For example teach them about color. Ask them to find
out the things that have the same color as the materials you explained, such as
find out all the things that has green color, yellow color and red color.
c. Ask
them to give you the real things such as leaves for green. If it is not
possible ask them to name the things that they found. With this activity, the
students will not feel bored because they are exposed to the materials and
children always love to be out side the class.
